The future may offer few certainties, but there are some things that I feel are constant. With a few notable exceptions, most of us want to build a life of joy and growth where there is always room at the table for just one more friend. Where the home we make for ourselves restores us and inspires the best in our nature.
MakeNest is now twenty years old. In all these seasons, I have been blessed to help make nests for people where they can recharge and find sanctuary. Homes people can be proud of and confident in as they welcome in friends, family and even strangers. As any small business owner knows, twenty years is a significant milestone. We survived a great recession and a pandemic. We changed shape and scale to keep central what inspires me and best serves my clients.
I can credit a lot of people for inspiring me to make the leap and for supporting me along the way. My sister had just opened a bookstore in 2004 and showed me that sometimes you simply have to venture risk in order to see a cherished dream take shape. My husband has been my champion throughout and is always game to help. Friends and team members along the way brought ideas and perspectives that helped MakeNest to become a smarter, better business.
Cherished clients, entrusting me with transforming their homes, continue to make me a more effective designer. There is not a part of our process that was not a response to a time when I learned that I could have been clearer or done better.
Now as always, I am looking forward.
In helping make comfortable and beautiful nests for my clients, I know I am providing something essential. It is part of our human coding to want to return at day’s end to a place where we feel safety and love and belonging. So as we lift our eyes to the next turn around the sun, I look forward to continuing this beloved journey with people who, like me, know that home offers a magic that keeps us rising.
Stay bright, my friends.
